As winter approaches, the financial burdens increase. Families need to buy heating fuel, school tuition fees, heaters, and other winter-related needs, which are all standards of living needed to live in dignity. However, vulnerable families could not afford these necessities and require assistance.
In order to reduce the effects of winter for the most vulnerable, the Lebanese Organization for Studies and Training (LOST), in partnership with the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), started the implementation of the “Winterization Support in Baalbeck for Vulnerable Syrian and Lebanese Families” in December 2019. This project targeted 500 of the most vulnerable families in Baalbeck after being subjected to a vulnerability assessment identifying their level of vulnerability. The beneficiaries received 40 USD worth of heating fuel (roughly 68 liters) for December, which is not a large amount but does greatly reduce the effects of the cold winter, reduces the burdens. The beneficiaries will receive 40 USD worth of fuel again in January.
LOST and MCC are continuously cooperating in order to reduce vulnerability in the area of Baalbeck-Hermel, and this project is one amongst many projects targeting the Syrian refugees and the Lebanese host community funded by MCC.
