On Wednesday, June 13th, a flood struck the town of Ras Baalbeck in Northern Baalbeck-Hermel Governorate, leaving behind damaged houses and roads in the area. This flood was the result of severe climate change and an abundance of rain in the area, and it has not been witnessed in the area in over forty years. The impact was so stringent to the point that the town was not fully equipped to handle the aftermath. As a prompt response, the Lebanese Organization for Studies and Training (LOST) sent volunteers to Ras Baalbeck to provide support with opening the roads and cleaning houses who have experienced damage due to the torrent.
Youth volunteers who assisted in Ras Baalbeck were part of the UNICEF project entitled, “Skills for Active Youth”. The effects of this project were clearly demonstrated as youth put into use the life skills that they acquired while providing support in the town. Unfortunately, this flood left one victim to die due to suffocation from water entering her home. Her family was occupied with the burial and accepting condolences, therefore, youth volunteers took it upon themselves to assist her family in cleaning and organizing her damaged home.
