“Literacy is the most basic currency of the knowledge economy.” Based on this idea, the Lebanese Organization of Studies and Training (LOST), in collaboration with UNICEF, launched a two-month Basic Literacy and Numeracy (BLN) program on November 28, 2016.
The program is designed to target 1,350 children who are mostly Syrians living in informal tented settlements (ITS) with the main goal of providing them with basic knowledge in order to be prepared for a more advanced program called Accelerated Literacy Program (ALP). The learners who go through the two programs will have the ability to enter public schools. For a wide outreach of the program, the lessons are being held at 12 teaching hubs managed by LOST staff. Aside from educating children with basic subjects (Math, Science, French, and Arabic), extra-curricular activities which include sports, arts, and music are included in the program to encourage hobby building and an overall safe and fun environment for these children.
The collaboration between LOST and UNICEF in this program is to assure that no child gets left behind, and to give these children the tools needed to attain a brighter future for them and the community as a whole.
