Millions of people in Lebanon are already struggling with food insecurity due to pre-existing shocks or crises even before the COVID-19 pandemic which people were not equipped to face. Baalbeck-Hermel is one of the main Lebanese regions that suffered from the continuous crises. However, as it occupies large lands that depend on agricultural production and seasonal jobs in agriculture, LOST saw an opportunity to be an effective factor in reducing the effects of these crises. When tragedy strikes, people band together in solidarity. Age, wealth, race, religion, politics, and all other things that make us who we are as individuals seem to matter a little less.
Agriculture plays a crucial role in the life of an economy, it’s the backbone of most economic systems. It not only provides food and raw material, but also employment opportunities to a very large portion of the population.
As part of its initiatives, LOST harvested potatoes at the community farm with the help of a crowd of staff, farmers, activists, and interested people. Potatoes will be distributed among vulnerable families in the Baalbeck-Hermel region. The rest of the production will be sold in the community farm’s market with studied prices. This will improve the food security of many.
Today, marketing, processing, distributing agricultural products, etc. are all accepted as part of modern agriculture and in the course of economic development. The rapid rate of growth in the agriculture sector gives a progressive outlook and further motivation for development. As a result, it helps to create a proper atmosphere for the general economic development of the economy.
