Since 2019, the economic crisis has been worsening and the majority of Lebanese people have been suffering from its effects continuously. To counter the ramifications of this crisis on the vulnerable families, many internationally funded emergency response interventions took place in the different areas of Lebanon. The World Food Programme (WFP) is one of the prominent agencies that interfered to mitigate the crisis affects both immediately and strategically.
The “In-Kind Distribution” project, implemented by the Lebanese Organization for Studies and Training (LOST), in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) is initially designed to secure the food security of the most vulnerable families in Baalbeck-Hermel through the provision of 62 Kg food kits per month over 6 months over multiple cycles.
From May 2020 until August 2021, 40,457 food kits were distributed. Offering food kits to the most vulnerable population is very essential as it secures the most basic need of nutrition. People do not have an alternative since resources are scarce, and food prices are becoming more and more expensive by the day. A family can move to a cheaper house, or move in with another family, but they cannot find an alternative solution for food security. The already existing resources are diminishing and almost depleted, the subsidization of goods is being reduced and even lifted -as the case for the fuel, resulting in the majority of vulnerable individuals not having the capacities or means to maintain their food security needs.
LOST, in partnership with WFP, has been operating in line with the second UN Sustainable Development Goal “Zero Hunger”. To achieve food security and improve the nutrition of the most vulnerable is highly important for the advancement of civilization; if the most basic needs are met, then individuals are able to meet their psychological needs and eventually reaching self-fulfillment.
